How to Choose a Photographer | Southern Maryland Photographer

So you have decided you want photos taken of your family, child(ren), for your engagement, for that special someone, etc, etc....the list could go on and on.  Choosing the right photographer can be a daunting task.  Let's face it, the photography industry is a heavily saturated market making a tough decision that much tougher.

I recently found myself searching for photographers.  I was looking for someone for head shots for my business as well as someone for an upcoming wedding.  I had a bit of an upper hand already knowing many photographers personally and being very familiar with their work but still the decision is not an easy one.

I'll go over a few things that I think are important to take into consideration while doing your own search.  This is by no means the end all be all for guides to choosing a photographer.  This is just my personal perspective in hopes to help you make an informed decision.

1.  What type of Photography are you looking for?

Not all photographers offer every type of photography and this is for a good reason.  We all have strengths and weaknesses. We all have different styles.  I suggest starting your search by looking for someone who offers or specializes in the type of photography you want.

2.   What style of Photography do you like/want?

This is where it can get tricky.  Photography is an art and because of that everyone will be a little different.  Some use lots of props and backdrops, some offer natural light, while others offer studio lighting.  Some have very dreamy, airy looks to their photos while others have more moody matte looks.  Some will pose you and others will document you.  If you have a vision or look in mind make sure to find someone who does that look.

3.  What is your budget?

This can be tricky.  I personally follow a photographer from another state who offers these amazing, dreamy, magical photos but she is so far out of my price range we might as well consider a session with her "a pipe dream".  Luckily there are many affordable photographers who are in my budget and offer beautiful photography so I'll be ok ;)  Just because you can't afford your favorite photographer doesn't mean you have to settle.  Find someone in your price range.  There are many new or just beginning photographers out there.  Keep in mind they are just starting out so don't overwhelm them with your perfect pinterest board from seasoned pros or you may set yourself up for a pinterest fail.  Give them an idea of what you like and then let them bring their vision to light.  If they are new they may be too shy to say I can't do that.

It also may be hard to know up front if a photographer is in your budget because many don't list their full pricing.  There is a reason for this.  We like to talk with you first to find out what you are looking for.  Due to the custom nature of many sessions pricing can vary.  Note: Many photographers offer payment plans.

Final Tips:

Once you find a photographer you love, stick with them, grow with them, and make memories with them.  You may not find your perfect photographer the first time out and that's ok.  Find someone you feel comfortable with, your kids respond to, someone you connect with.

If your current photographer doesn't offer the type of session you are looking for don't be afraid to talk to them about it.  You can decide together whether or not they will be able to do it for you and if they can't they can help you find someone who can.  I'm happy to refer my clients out if they are looking for something I don't offer.  I'm also happy to work with clients to come up with custom sessions that are just about them.  To showcase their personal style or family's/Child's personality.

Good luck in your search.  I hope you find your dream photographer and fill your walls with many wonderful memories.
